The
curriculum is comparable to the home school district’s curriculum in both
content and required work. Students are sometimes able to participate more in
our educational center because classroom sizes are smaller than those in their
public school. Classrooms in the educational center have 10 students per one
certified teacher and one aide.
THERAPEUTIC COMPONENT
Crisis-intervention, consultation
with staff, individualized counseling, group counseling and social skills
classes are some of the services provided by the educational center Physical
management of students is used only as a last resort and only if the student is
a danger to himself or others.
DILLARD HARRIS EDUCATIONAL CENTER
Seeking Student Success
The Day Treatment Program established in 1976 was
renamed in 1999 as the Dillard Harris Educational Center after a
prominent Educator and Board Member of Guardian Angel Home. The
program accepts students, grades 5-12, who have been unsuccessful in
both regular education and in the special education classrooms within
their public school. The program’s therapeutic approach focuses on
meeting the student’s emotional and academic needs. Behavior
modification and supportive approaches are utilized in helping students
develop the skills necessary to return to their home school. Individual
and group therapy are provided to help students understand and overcome
the behaviors that have excluded them from the public school setting. An
individualized instructional program is offered to students to correct
specific academic skills and deficiencies that have contributed to their
behavior problems.
ADMISSION PROCEDURES
Referrals to the educational center
are made through the local school district or special education cooperatives.
More information about referral materials is available by calling the
Educational Coordinator.
TRANSITION
BACK TO PUBLIC SCHOOL
Length of enrollment in the
educational center varies from student to student. The average minimum stay is
one year. Students must demonstrate that they are able to successfully
manage part-time placement at the home school before full-time placement will
occur.
